One of the elements of Mary’s Land Camp that we are most proud of is the 100% outdoor aspect of camp. We have carefully curated the camp grounds to allow for the kid’s to safely spend 100% of their time at camp outside in the fresh air. With over 10 shaded areas, including pavilions, camp shacks, and open-aired barns, the children are still protected from the harsh sun or other elements while being outside. Farmers spend most of their time outdoors – so should the children at farm camp! But why is it so important that they be outside in the first place? What’s the difference between an outdoor camp and an indoor camp?
Why do kids like to be outside? Are they naturally attracted to its many possibilities, natural elements (like rocks, leaves, and water), and beautiful animals? When we let – and get – kids outside, they’re empowered to be themselves or whomever their imaginations conjure. They devise their own games and activities; develop narratives about nature; and discover the creatures around them. In the great outdoors, their “inside voices” and regulated movements become less relevant. Kids can be loud and move freely. They often incorporate found objects into their play — just think of all the things an amazing stick can become! And since they interact with less structure outdoors, they can test new skills with real or imaginary friends. Children may also expand their critical thinking skills as they navigate the environment. Not to mention the the actual health benefits from being outside. Scientific studies have found that children who regularly play outside show: Better use of all five senses, Expanded learning, Greater independence, Greater muscle strength, Improved brain development,
Improved communication skills, Improved motor skills, Improved overall health, Improved peer-to-peer relationships, Increased appreciation for the environment, Increased openness with parents and caregivers, Increased self-awareness, Lower body mass index, Improved sleep and attitudes. Give your children the opportunity for a better life by sending them to Mary’s Land Camp this summer! Their physical and mental health will thank you for it… and you’ll have a happier kid at home.
We’d be honored to provide new outdoor experiences for your family! Check out our camp schedule and enrollment information. It’ll be a great summer!
